Do You Have a Cold or Allergies?
This is the time of year people often begin to experience seasonal allergies, but with so many symptoms similar to that of a common cold, how can we be sure what we are suffering from? There are some ways to distinguish the difference between the common cold and allergies. But the best way to be sure is to visit a local doctor! Here are some general symptoms of each and how they may affect you depending on if you have allergies or a cold!
A common cold usually last anywhere from 3-14 days while allergies can last months if a person is continually exposed to the allergen. Both can happen at anytime of the year, but colds are most often associated with winter and many allergies, such as grass and pollen, are seasonal to spring and summer.
Aches and Pains
Allergies will not cause muscle aches while the hundreds of viruses that cause colds will sometimes cause your body to feel these sorts of pains.
Running a fever is not usually a symptom of a cold, but it can happen. However it may be more likely that you have the flu. There is no chance of running a fever due to allergies.
A sore throat is a common symptom of a cold, but is rarely caused by allergies.
Both a cold and allergies can cause a runny or stuffy nose but there’s a difference! If it is caused by allergies the mucus will usually be clear, a cold will cause green or yellow mucus.
Watery or Itchy Eyes
Itchy eyes are one of the most common symptoms of an allergy attack but this will hardly ever be a sign you have the cold.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you should seek the advice a physician right away. The doctor will be able to diagnose and relieve the issue with the help of medication or other treatments. For personal health care in Louisville give Lawrence Rueff, M.D. a call at (502) 287-1599.
