5 Tips For Preventing Coronavirus Transmission

Covid-19 has dominated the headlines---and with good reason. While some have tried to compare it to the flu, it is actually much more dangerous, particularly to older people and those who are immunocompromised. It is also more easily transmitted, making it very important that we all do our part to slow its spread while healthcare facilities try to gather life-saving supplies. Here's a look at five ways to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Thoroughly Wash Hands

Though we're often hearing about the importance of washing hands to slow the spread of the virus, it bears repeating. Hands should be thoroughly scrubbed with soap for twenty seconds. This should be done after anytime you've been in public, or have reason to believe you could have been exposed. If hand soap isn't readily available, you can use alcohol-based hand sanitizers (60% ethanol/70% isopropanol) to deactivate the virus.

Only Go Out When Necessary

Now is not the time to go shopping without the need to purchase essentials. Remember, even if you don't have symptoms, you could still potentially be spreading the virus to someone who is vulnerable to severe effects.

Social Distancing

It's in our nature to interact with others. But at this time, it's of great importance to stay at least six feet away from others while in public. The more we abide by social distancing now, the sooner that life will get back to normal without having to worry about this virus constantly---and indefinitely---being present.

Keep Surfaces Clean

If you have any reason to believe that a surface could have been exposed to the virus, it's safest to clean it with agents such as bleach, alcohol-based sanitizer, and soap and water.

Listen to Medical Professionals for Advice

Though some are hoping we can get back to normal in a relatively short period of time, it's important to focus our attention on the advice of the top epidemiologists, who are presently advising that we could be in for a much longer haul. The talking heads on various cable news networks, as well as some politicians, are more likely to voice their opinions, rather than scientifically-backed medical advice. By being smart about who we trust for advice on coronavirus, we can be better about taking the necessary steps to protect ourselves and our fellow community members.
