4 Tips for a Healthy Summer

The sun is out, the fish are jumping and the trees are green. Ahh, life couldn't get any better. Or could it? Summer time is a great season to kickstart a healthy lifestyle. There are ample opportunities for eating right and playing hard, resulting in a healthier you. Here are our four fun but important steps to being healthy in the summer!

1. Drink "Lite"

Barbeques and alcohol go hand in hand like Barbie and Ken. It may be tempting to have one too many, but be careful. If you do choose to drink, limit yourself to chilled lite beer or sangria. Both are refreshing but help keep the calorie count down. Drinking in moderation, one to two drinks daily, has been shown to also help protect against heart disease. So have fun, but don't over do it!

2. Take a vacation

Hit the beach, the mountains or visit an exotic city. Vacations have multiple health benefits, beginning with stress reduction and it can help lower your blood pressure, which ultimately also leads to a healthier heart. Vacations are also a great time for bonding between loved ones.

3. Get Dirty

The weather is nice, so get outside and play! Casual lawn care or planting a garden has been known to greatly reduce stress levels. It helps people stay mentally grounded when they have their hands in the dirt. Or hit the trails, hiking or biking are great ways to stay active in the long summer days. But be sure to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

4. Eat Fresh

The summer is a unique season that offers plenty of fresh foods that you can't necessarily get the rest of the year. Fresh fruit and vegetables are widely available along with a multitude of different types of berries. Berries, especially blue and blackberries, are high in antioxidants to help prevent tissue damage.

This summer, dedicate yourself to your health, but have fun doing it, but don't over do it with some things (alcohol!).
