But by making healthy lifestyle choices, you can help to ensure that your blood pressure stays at a safe level without relying on medication. Here are five tips for maintaining healthy blood pressure.

Consume Lots of Fresh Fruits & Vegetables

If you consume a lot of red meat, cheese, and refined carbs, then you'll want to overhaul your diet. By basing your diet around fresh fruits and vegetables, it'll be much easier to keep your blood pressure at a healthy level. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to eliminate animal products from your diet. Rather, it's about cutting back on foods that are high in saturated fat and sodium. And rather than eating a lot of foods that are high in refined carbs (like pasta and white bread), it's better to consume whole grains that are higher in nutritional value.

Daily Exercise

If you have high blood pressure, you'll want to aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day. This can lower your blood pressure by 5 to 8 mm Hg. You can get this exercise by briskly walking, lightly jogging, or bicycling (a stationary bike will work).

Easy on the Alcohol

A glass of wine with dinner is not necessarily a concern. Rather, heavy drinking is what should be avoided because it can cause a spike in blood pressure, as well as various other health problems.

Minimize Stress

As stress levels increase, so can blood pressure. If your professional or personal life often stresses you out, then it's worth it for your health to find ways to relax. Ways to reduce stress include yoga, meditation, and seeing a therapist.

Stop Smoking

At this point, it's unlikely you need to be told that smoking is horrible for your health. However, even if you still struggle to quit, it's always worth trying to stop smoking. A personal physician can be helpful with formulating a plan to end your smoking habit once and for all.
