Basic Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System

One of the most effective ways to strengthen your immune system is to make healthy dietary changes. This can substantially lower your risk of heart disease, obesity, and type-2 diabetes, which are conditions that make it much harder for your immune system to ward off harmful pathogens. You'll want to replace saturated fats from red meat and cheese with healthy fats from olive oil, nuts, and avocados. And for protein, it'll be better to shift toward consuming beans, bean-based products (such as tofu), and seafood. Also, it's helpful to consume produce that is high in vitamin C, such as oranges, tomatoes, strawberries, and broccoli. It's worth noting that while vitamin supplements may be helpful to a relatively small extent, a better way to improve immune health is to focus on diet and exercise.

You'll also want to avoid sugary drinks like soda pop that increase your diabetes risk. And you should strongly moderate consumption of juices and alcohol. Instead, you should drink a lot of water. In your circulatory system, there's a fluid called lymph, which carries immune cells that fight off infections. When you're dehydrated, lymph movement is slowed down, which can reduce your immune system's ability to fight off disease. For most people, a reasonable goal is to drink four to six cups of water per day.

Getting regular exercise will help with maintaining strong immune health. However, some research has shown that highly intense exercise can actually negatively impact immune health, while moderate exercise—such as jogging—helps to boost your immune system.

For a strong immune system, stress management is also important. Ways to reduce stress include exercise, meditation, seeing a therapist, and simply taking time away from work when you feel like you need to.
