Tips on washing your hands to help prevent the spread of germs

No matter what time of year it is, it is important to be mindful of ways that we can help to stop the spread of germs from person to person. Some measures we can take are: staying home if we're sick, wearing gloves when handling food, and getting a flu shot. But one common measure that many of us could be a little bit better about is washing our hands thoroughly.

It's easy to forget the importance of washing our hands. After all, germs are microscopic and since we're unable to actually see them with our naked eye, we don't stop to consider their presence on our hands. Nonetheless, they are there and they're ready to spread along from one person to another. This can be dangerous considering the medical conditions that some people have. Even if you're in optimal health with a strong immune system, you don't want to pass germs along to someone who might have a compromised immune system or is in delicate health. The elderly, pregnant women, and babies should also be treated with more fragility when it comes to their exposure to germs. One of the best ways you can help to prevent the spread of germs is by being mindful about thoroughly washing your hands. Here are some tips on how to do so.

Pre-soak

Be sure to thoroughly wet your hands with either warm or cold water. There's a belief amongst many people that the water must be warm. However, cold water can suffice just fine. After soaking your hands, turn the faucet off and prepare to lather.

Lather up

Thoroughly cover your hands with soap by rubbing them together. You'll want to be sure that you get the backs of your hands, the crevices beneath your knuckles, and under your fingernails----germs could be present in all of these areas.

Scrub-a-dub

Be sure that you then scrub your hands for at least twenty seconds. Many people grow up thinking that thirty seconds is the right amount, but twenty is just fine, so long as you actually count out in full seconds.

Rinse

Now it's time to rinse off under running water. You'll want to rinse until all the soap suds are gone, since unrinsed residue can dry out your hands.

Dry

Thoroughly dry your hands with a clean towel and you're on your way. Air drying can work too.
